For two years now, Jay has been tirelessly researching renting a cabin for an official Burnham family vacation with just our immediate family. It seems that every summer we, as a family, go places and have fun experiences, but it's always in association with a visiting family member or an invitation by friends. So we decided to start a tradition to have at least one vacation experience a summer, just the four of us. Both Jay and I have a fond affection for being lakeside, so we thought a cabin rental would be ideal, and we thought a visit to the Detroit Lakes area would be a relaxing getaway. We've been to Detroit Lakes quite a bit when we've gone to visit our friends, Wade and Setty, who run a wonderful restaurant called The Fireside, but we've never experienced an extended stay there.
Jay's been working quite a bit lately, so we only had a few days in DL. So instead of renting a cabin (which usually requires a week-long stay), we decided to try a stay at a hotel. We chose The Lodge on Lake Detroit, a beautiful hotel with a beach and many great family attributes. We rented a beachfront room, with a walk-out right on the lake level. Neither of us had stayed at this hotel before, but we were very impressed with our stay. The hotel is beautiful, reasonably-priced, clean, spacious, and we had the convenience of a hotel stay while sleeping just a few hundred feet from the lake.
Nothing truly eventful happened while on vacation--Eli played on the beach, we swam in the pool, enjoyed a few amazing meals at The Fireside, and just enjoyed being together.
The timing of the trip was also ideal. In just a few short days I will be back to work, so it was nice to have one more wonderful memory of leisurely days with the kids to tuck in my pocket.
